Robert Muldoon had large swathes of the Central Plateau old growth native forest felled to make way for Pine Trees in his Think Big strategy. Many of the trees of lesser value such as trees with Kaikaka were left on the forest floor or in gullies and streams. The rights to recover these ‘left overs” have been sold to millers and merchants more recently and I believe are currently being used to collect and mill timbers from the plateau that are not readily available today.
