The timber this rack is made from is Southern Rata. This Rata starts out life as a vine that grows up a host tree, eventually strangling, covering and killing the host. The vine then goes on to become a forest tree in its own right. The timber is hard and dense and also makes great knife handles.

Through a contact, I purchased a small quantity of this rare timber that belonged to an old boy who had had the timber sitting under corrugated iron in his yard for around 40 years. It was leftover from a flooring job from the 1970”s in a Community Hall in Waipukarau.
